The Legislative Council will sit today, with some members present, following deliberations between
the Government, Opposition and crossbenchers yesterday.
There was a difficult choice to be made between two central priorities. One, is the importance to
have the opportunity to scrutinise Government, the other is the very strong advice from a health
perspective to defer Parliament.
I travelled to Melbourne on Sunday, as I usually do, to prepare for the sitting week, and the health
advice came through subsequent to this. I have taken stringent measures during my time in
Melbourne to protect myself with PPE and have isolated myself from other people.
After careful consideration, I have decided it is in the best interests of my community to not attend
Parliament and to return home, which I am doing today. I will continue to work from home in
Wangaratta and observe the health advice regarding social distancing and maintaining careful
personal hygiene.
I have tabled a number of matters on behalf of Northern Victoria with the Parliament clerks today
for the attention of the Government. I will continue to represent the needs of Northern Victoria, as I
have since Parliament last adjourned, through regular liaison with the Office of the Premier and
appropriate Ministers, working with other local MPs and stakeholders.
