Tania Maxwell MP, Member for Northern Victoria, has raised concerns in Parliament about claims that high-speed internet access has recently become available and used by detainees at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre to contact at least one victim of crime and to download inappropriate material.

Ms Maxwell said the possibility that detainees are regularly downloading and viewing inappropriate material and pornography on taxpayer-funded laptops was disturbing.  There has also allegedly been at least one very worrying case of an inmate making uninvited online contact with a victim of their crime.

Ms Maxwell asked the Corrections Minister to confirm if the claims were true and, if so, the specific actions taken by Corrections Victoria and/or the Government in response.

 Quotes by Tania Maxwell MP

“I’m astounded by the possibility that inmates have unrestricted internet that gives them access to inappropriate material.”

“The potential for high-speed internet access to be utilised by an offender to contact a victim is appalling, and downright dangerous.”
