Tania Maxwell MP, Member for Northern Victoria, has asked the Minister for Housing to detail the rollout of the Social Housing Efficiency Program across Northern Victoria.
In Parliament last year, Ms Maxwell asked the Government to install air-conditioning in social housing properties and was grateful for the 2020-21 Budget response committing installations in up to 2,000 properties through the Social Housing Energy Efficiency Program. This includes air-conditioning, draught sealing and ceiling insulation in properties across Mildura, Swan Hill, Yarriambiack, Buloke, Gannawarra, Campaspe, Moira and Greater Shepparton Local Government Areas.
Ms Maxwell said the recent heatwave, where temperatures in some areas reached up to 45 degrees with oppressive overnight lows, demonstrated the urgent need for the rollout of the air-conditioning to mitigate general health risks and the potential escalation of family violence and the misuse of alcohol and drugs.
Ms Maxwell has asked the Minister for Housing to specify, for each town within the Northern Victoria electorate, the proportion of properties without air-conditioning that will be included in the rollout.
Quotes by Tania Maxwell MP
“We have had some very hot days, as we do every summer, and I’m very concerned for the general health of residents in social housing without air-conditioning and the further risk of family violence and substance misuse.”
“The Social Housing Energy Efficiency Program is welcome – and I have written to the Minister for Housing and tabled a question in Parliament today for full details on the rollout of air-conditioning in social housing across Northern Victoria.”
